Youth Advisory Council

The Clayton County Youth Advisory Council is a forum for Clayton County youth to present to adult leaders important issues facing them. Sponsored by the Clayton County Collaborative, the YAC meets monthly with leaders of the Collaborative to explore issues and solutions for concerns. YAC has an impact on the decisions that the adult leadership makes.

The purpose of the Youth Advisory Council of Clayton County is to advise our partners of the Clayton Collaborative Authority about the concerns, issues, and solutions, which impact the youth of Clayton County by providing a forum to express the opinions of local Clayton County Youth.

History

The YAC was started in September of 2001 by four of Clayton County's 4-H'ers who had attended a Georgia Youth Summit at Rock Eagle in Eatonton, GA. The youth summit challenged them to make a plan which would better the lives of youth in their communities. In response, the students decided to create a youth forum which would include members from every high school in the county. In 2002 the Youth Advisory Council was welcomed into the Clayton Collaborative Authority as a full partner.

In 2003, the YAC hosted a youth summit at Mt. Zion High School in Clayton County. In 2004 the YAC developed and distributed a survey for Clayton County Parks and Recreation, to help determine what should be placed within the new recreation centers being built with SPLOST funds.

In both 2006 and 2007 the Clayton County YAC was recognized for outstanding presentations to the Georgia Youth Summit.
